Revisit How to Start a Mindful Drinking Journey

Revisit How to Start a Mindful Drinking Journey

1 In 2023 1 in 4 Americans knew about the Sober-Curious Movement, and 34% aimed to drink less. That trend has only continued in 2024. For various reasons, we know that Americans are drinking less, and enjoying drinking less because the trend continues to grow year after year. If you’re thinking about embarking on a mindful drinking journey, you’ve landed in the right place! NCSolutions reports adults are drinking less alcohol due to health reasons, family history with addiction, and simply not wanting to drink, among other reasons.
No matter your reason, we think it’s essential to keep a few things in mind.

Start With Intention

Answer a few questions for yourself.

What are you hoping to gain from mindful drinking?

What kind of support will you need?

How will you need to change behaviors or environments?

Define your why or reasons for cutting back (it’s beneficial to write this down).

Having answers to questions like these will help you begin with intention.

Get to Know Yourself Again

Starting a mindful drinking journey will likely give you a few hours back each week that were previously spent drinking or recovering from drinking. Fill that time with plenty of rest and positive actions. This is how you’ll start building new habits that feel more aligned with your goals.

Get outside, be creative, pick up a book, whip up a new recipe, spend time with family, or help out your community - there are endless ways to spend your time. The most important thing is that it’s meaningful to you, and benefiting your life. As you notice “gaps” in your routine, be ready to make better, healthier choices. As humans, we change all the time, so it only makes sense that we get to know ourselves continually

Re-Think Your Drink

We created Cut Above to make drinking less an easier transition and still just as tasty. It’s up to each of us to decide when and how much alcohol we want to consume.

If you’re sober-curious or starting a mindful drinking journey, you’re probably wondering what you’ll drink at parties and events now. And there was a time when you might’ve been stuck with soda or water, but not in the Sober Movement era!

Consider re-stocking your home bar with alcohol-free beverages. If you’re close to an NA bar or bottle shop, stop in to sample a few things by ordering a drink! Spending time in NA spaces is a fun way to figure out what you like, and maybe meet like-minded people. If you have a favorite or “usual” drink, chances are the non-alcoholic version exists.

Also, If you don’t know if you have an NA bottle shop near you, check out the map from Dry Atlas or order products online.

Take your power back by filling your cup with something you choose and genuinely enjoy.

Find Peer Support

Whether you’re participating in a dry month challenge like Sober October or are planning to stay sober/soberish for a while, community can make all the difference.

Start by inviting friends or family members who might be interested in supporting you to join your mission! If this isn’t an option, search for groups in your area or online to get connected with. Having a friend who understands what you’re going through on a personal level creates accountability and healthy motivation.

You can also try spending time in different places to find new passions or expand your social circle. Think about activities you love or have wanted to try, and make an effort to incorporate them into your schedule.

“The people I’ve met in sobriety and recovery spaces are the most self-aware, forgiving, hilarious, understanding, kind, strong, generous, compassionate, powerful, resilient, and intelligent people I have ever been lucky enough to know.” - Meg Fee
