Socially conscious lyrics wasn’t anything new in 1991. It had existed before in other genres and even within Hip-Hop. What Q-Tip and Phife Dawg brought to the cannon was sublime lyrical interplay. Throughout the album they play off each other, share points of view, interject, pause, trade lines all in the name of delivering an intelligent and informed socially conscious perspective. The album incorporates heavy jazz influences which only a handful of acts at the time could do.
What stands out to us here at Cut Above is the brilliance of the conversation that occurs throughout. Some conversations are easy. Some are hard. What we celebrate is the fact that the conversation occurred. Conversation is what connects us, broadens our world view, and allows us to share our perspective while being present for someone else to do the same. We think the world could use a little more conversation. So, pop this album on, invite over a friend and have a real conversation. Cheers to the conversers!
